D is for the Duff by Kody Keplinger

Okay so I know I said this A to Z would feature Indie Authors but I have fallen in love with The Duff and cannot think of a better book to represent D. I believe that Kody went the traditional route when she created The Duff. Meaning she followed the yellow brick road and met some editors and agents along the way and eventually ended up in the magical land of publishing, where the Great Wizard of Books granted her the wish of a story in print.  (Oh yeah I totally reached on that one!)

The Duff follows Bianca, a average girl who has two gorgeous friends Jess and Casey who seem to have guys flocking to them around every corner. Bianca has always been accepted by her friends, and even found herself approachable until a loud mouthed boy named Wesley calls her a "Duff" otherwise know as the Designated Ugly Fat Friend. The Duff is that friend in a group that is used and befriended in order to get near her gorgeous besties. Totally mortified by this new stereotype. Bianca lashes out at Wesley until he is the only person that can help her overcome some painful obstacles that get in her way.

If you are a follower of teen movies then you know The Duff was just made into a major motion picture. (FYI probably my new favorite movie!) There is good news and bad news.  The bad news is the book is absolutely nothing like the movie.  The good news?  The book is absolutely fabulous on it's own and I do not mind at all that the movie differs from it.  They are both equally awesome in their own ways.  The book has a totally different premise in the fact that Bianca uses Wesley in a physical way to deal with some emotional issues she is having with her father.  In the movie Bianca uses Wesley to help her score a date with the boy she has a crush on Toby Tucker.  That crush is referenced in the book, but the outcome of that romance is a little different than what happened in the movie.

The Duff is one of my favorite books now. I really enjoyed how Kody brought out the inner struggle in her characters. Focusing not just on the love story but also on the outside factors that really make the teenage psyche twitch. I think Wesley is my favorite character, and I love Bianca's spunky take-no-shit attitude.  It's definitely a great read if you are into YA Contemporary which I am!

Here is the blurb!
                 Movie Poster!
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper may not be the prettiest girl in her high school, but she has a loyal group of friends, a biting wit, and a spot-on BS detector. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush, who calls Bianca the Duff--the designated ugly fat friend--of her crew.

But things aren't so great at home and Bianca, desperate for a distraction, ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

Just for fun and because I love the movie!  Here is the trailer for the movie soon to be released on dvd in May!

  1. I've had Duff on my reading list forever, but I still haven't gotten around to it. And even if the movie is nothing like the book, it still seems hilarious.
